“Unforgettable experience” for Psychology graduate
Graduation will be an extra-special occasion for mum of four, Rebekah Smallwood, as she graduates from Queen’s University with a degree in Psychology today (Friday 30 June).
From South Belfast, Rebekah left school at 15 without any qualifications but after undertaking an access course, she applied for a place at Queen’s. During the second year of her studies, Rebekah had her fourth child and with the support of her family and university staff, she managed to juggle studies and motherhood.
Rebekah says her time at Queen’s has been an unforgettable experience, which has allowed her to grow personally, emotionally and academically. She now plans to apply for a PhD in Clinical Psychology.
She said: “I have had the opportunity to gain confidence in my abilities and developed valuable skills which I can apply to everyday life. I have also met lifelong friends along the way. Completing a degree and juggling three young children at home, then having another little boy during the Easter break in second year and sitting my exams that summer, before returning to complete my final year in September, has not been an easy task.
“To finally be graduating is almost unbelievable. I am just so pleased that I have had the persistence to stick at it and can finally benefit from graduating from Queen’s.”
Rebekah added: “The University has been phenomenal in the support and encouragement they have given me throughout my time at Queen’s. My lecturers were extremely understanding and supportive and I was always able to seek fantastic advice from the range of support services provided by Queen’s.”
