Dr Julie Norman is an expert on conflict, security, human rights and development in the Middle East and Africa.

Dr Norman’s research interests include Middle East politics, violent extremism, non-violent and violent resistance movements, and the experiences of ex-combatants, refugees, political prisoners, and youth in protracted conflicts. Her work has taken her all over the Middle East, including Israel-Palestine, Iraq, and Lebanon, and her current research includes comparative work with areas in the Middle East, Northern Ireland, and sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr Norman is the author of The Second Palestinian Intifada: Civil Resistance (Routledge 2010), and the co-editor (with Maia Carter Hallward) of Nonviolent Resistance in the Second Intifada: Activism and Advocacy (Palgrave 2011) and Understanding Nonviolence (Polity 2015).
