International Postgraduate

Queen's welcomes applications from international students who wish to undertake a postgraduate degree programme.

Founded by Queen Victoria in 1845, Queen’s University Belfast has a long history of academic achievement. The University is situated in the leafy suburbs of south Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland. Easily accessible by air, there are more than 35 flights available from London to Belfast each day.

The international outlook of Queen’s is evidenced by the fact that a high proportion of its academic staff come from outside Northern Ireland. Queen’s graduates are making their mark all over the world in fields as diverse as physics, surgery, civil engineering, agriculture, archaeology and music.

The University has approximately 18,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, including 1200 international students from over 70 countries. The major proportion from outside the European Union come from China, Malaysia, the United States, the Indian Sub-Continent, Taiwan, the Middle East and Canada.

Welcome from the President and Vice-Chancellor

At Queen’s University Belfast we are well aware that you are facing a major decision. There are many issues for you to consider in choosing a destination for postgraduate study. Among the deciding factors when weighing up possible universities are their academic track records, their research and education facilities and their commitment to a fulfilling and enjoyable student experience. On these vital criteria, I am more than confident to commend the Queen’s postgraduate experience to you.

Queen’s has a long and distinguished tradition of research and education. This history of academic excellence provides a firm foundation for its Vision for the Future which will see the University enhance its reputation as an international research-driven institution. The Vision is summarized in just three words: 'Leading, Inspiring and Delivering'.

Underpinning our Vision is a £259 million investment in our staff, our research and education programmes and our student facilities. We are creating a campus which will be the envy of our peers nationally and internationally, and will underpin the 'Queen’s Experience' for future generations of students. Postgraduate students, perhaps more than any other sector of the dynamic Queen’s community, have most to gain from these developments.

Every year we welcome many hundreds of graduates in a multitude of disciplines who are keen to pursue postgraduate work in an intellectually stimulating environment. They not only choose Queen’s because of its research reputation but they also appreciate the international recognition accorded to our degrees and qualifications.

At Queen’s, we value postgraduate students very highly. We fully recognise and support their role in enriching our thriving research culture and contributing to our academic activity, and we aim to ensure that their time with us is as rewarding as possible. But don’t just take my word for it. If you read the comments from the international postgraduate students featured on this website, you will see that they have useful and informative points to make about life and study at Queen's.

Belfast is a vibrant city, which has been experiencing a remarkable regeneration over recent years. Queen’s plays a major role in this renaissance as an engine of economic growth and as a major centre of cultural, educational and social activity. The Northern Ireland hospitality is well-known and so too is the warm reception which Queen’s offers to its students.

We genuinely look forward to welcoming you and to sharing our exciting future with you. I wish you every success.
