Belfast Branch of the Young Archaeologist's Club
Project Description
The Belfast Branch of the Young Archaeologist's Club is based in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology. It forms part of the UK-wide Young Archaeologist's Club which is a component of the Council for British Archaeology. The aim of the latter organisation is to promote participation in archaeological research, education and the conservation of the built, buried, landscape and townscape heritage. The Young Archaeologist's Club provides an opportunity for children aged 8-16 years to share in this experience and discover just how much fun it can be to learn about the past.

We meet on the second Saturday of every month (except July). Our meetings take a variety of forms. Some involve a fieldtrip to a local site to learn about monuments and record them in the landscape, while others take place within the School and will focus on a theme, such as diet in the past or ancient religions. The thematic events generally involve short talks and a hands-on workshop which enables the children to work with real archaeological artefacts, such as animal bone, flint tools, pottery and insect remains.

All branch members will need to join the UK club at a fee of approximately 10 pounds for which they will get a membership pack, four copies of the Young Archaeologist magazine packed with stories of recent discoveries, news, features, competitions and things to do and make, free/reduced entry to museums and heritage sites across the UK and the chance to go on YAC activity holidays. The membership fee for the Belfast branch of the club is 5 pounds.
