Working with Children with Disabilities
Project Description
Medical students opt to undertake a placement during the semester in a local school which specialises in provision for primary and secondary children with special needs relating to physical disabilities such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy. The medical students interact with the children in the various therapy departments and classroom settings. The placement increases our students" awareness of the needs of these conditions but also builds the trust and confidence of the children in the medical profession many of whom have fears/anxieties relating to hospitals and doctors. The outreach is mutually beneficial for the academic staff, therapists and pupils of the School, their carers and the medical students
