Archaeological Excavation Open Days
Project Description
Eachyeaar the schoolof Archaeology and Palaeocology undertkes a rane of archaeolgical excavations across Northern Ireland thorugh its Centre for Archaelogical Fieldwork. This activity generates local public interest in the work being undertaken at a site in a locality. Members of the publoc (and particularly members of local historical societies)have always visited excavations in the host area where the investigation is being carried out, but the School is keen to develop this dialogue further. As Such it intends to introduce a series of formal "open days". It is intended that the first open day will be held in the excavation at Dunnyneill Island Strangford Lough, County Down,in early September 200/3

Supporting Partners: The Centre for Archaelogical Fieldwork undertakes the archaelogical fieldwork requirements of the Environment and Heritage Service. This leads to excavations being undertaken across Northern Ireland on the goverment agency's behalf. The EHS are supportive of all efforts made to publicise excavations and significant discoveries in the province's media and to engage the local population in the work being undertaken at sites in their vicinity.

Hosting School / Unit: Archaeology and Palaeocology

Target Audience: The target audience for the open days is the local population and members of local historical societies in the area where the archaelogical excavation is being undertaken.

Start Date - End Date: June to September each year: Details of individual days to be advertised in regional press (eg Coleraine Chronicle for excavations in the north-east of the province: Impartial Reporter for excavations in Fermanagh).
