Honorary Degrees Committee

Terms of Reference:

Derived from Statute XVIII -   
(a)  

Honorary Degrees may be conferred on persons of distinction in letters, the arts, science, technology, or professional life or for public service, service to the community, or for service to the University.

(b)   Before the Senate approves* the award of an Honorary Degree, it shall consider a report submitted through the Academic Council from a committee appointed for this purpose by the Senate and such committee shall consist of the President and Vice-Chancellor and an equal number of members of the Senate not being members of the Academic Council appointed by the Senate and members of the Academic Council appointed by the Academic Council.
* In June 2001, Senate agreed to formally delegate responsibility to the Honorary Degrees Committee for approving nominations for Honorary Degrees with the decisions of the Committee being reported subsequently to Senate and Academic Council for endorsement.

 Composition:

Chair:   President and Vice-Chancellor
Ex Officio:    Four members elected by Academic Council
    Four members of Senate who are also not members of Academic Council
In Attendance:    Registrar and Chief Operating Officer
    Relevant University Officers as required.

The Honorary Degrees Committee normally meets once a year, with extraordinary meetings arranged as necessary.
