Breast Cancer Research Programme:

  • This programme has a strong emphasis in understanding the biological basis of triple-negative breast cancers, the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat subgroup of breast cancers.

Colorectal Cancer Research Programme:

  • This programme encompasses the full-range of translational research activities, including a major effort in molecular pathology to drive patient stratification and simultaneously providing the foundation for research into the discovery of newly-defined clinically annotated groups.

Prostate Cancer Research Programme:

  • Our research is focused on the development of biomarkers that identify patients with life-threatening prostate cancer, on the biology that contributes to the relapse of disease after radiotherapy, and on the identification of new strategies to improve therapeutic response in patients with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate.

Haematological Malignancies:

  • This programme concentrates on the stratification of distinct myeloid leukemias with the study of epigenetic regulation emphasis within the laboratory research programme.

Targeting Therapies to Augment Lung Innate Immunity

Deciphering the Pathogenesis of Gram-negative bacterial infection

Analysis of on-line trials and experiments

Use of evidence in disaster response, such as the Wenchuan province earthquake of May 2008

The effect of vitamin D3 supplementation on insulin resistance

HDL Function

  • High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) protect against the development of atherosclerosis. There is currently great interest in the mechanisms by which this might occur, and in methods of measuring the function of HDL particles.

Cancer Epidemiology:

  • In the proposed studentship, data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink and other relevant sources (including from within China) will be used to investigate the association between use of these drugs and HCC risk.

Clinical And Experimental Ophthalmology:

  • Offered projects focus on sight-threatening retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity

Cardiovascular Remodelling Research:

  • Studentships are available with a specific focus on adverse cardiovascular remodelling, tissue protection/regeneration, and cardiovascular complications associated with chronic disease.

Diabetic Vascular Complications:

  • A broad range of cell-based and in vivo techniques is being employed to identify the molecular mechanisms of hyperglycaemia-induced loss of both micro and macro-vessel supply to tissues and organs in the diabetic patient.

Nursing and Midwifery

Exploring the impact of maternal stress on the fetus

Follow up study of late preterm infants at age 7

A study of the supportive care needs of men who have had testicular cancer: Supervisors:

A study of the palliative care needs of older adults in residential care.
