Seminar on Improving Citizen Participation and how universities can aid that process. It follows on from a Citizens’ Panel that explored how the Northern Ireland Assembly could better capture a citizen voice.

Experience has shown that when people are given the opportunity, the time and the information to deliberate and decide on issues that affect them, they usually develop sensible and pragmatic solutions.  The seminar will look at how we can reverse the trend of many people being switched off from politics and civic engagement and how universities and academic research and expertise can help develop models to improve civic participation.

The format will involve:

  • Introductions from each participant at the round table
  • Opening remarks by Dr Dara O’Hagan, Visiting Research Fellow with the Institute, on the purpose of the seminar and expected outcomes
  • Panel input 5 – 10 minutes each.  Dr James Organ, Lecturer in Law, School of Law & Social Justice, University of Liverpool; Jonathan Kuyper, Department of Politics, QUB.

A discussion/Q&A will follow and you are encouraged to contribute to the debate.  The solutions and insights that you bring, particularly in relation to your own area of work, will be invaluable.
