Aim

These Communication programmes have been designed to develop a conceptual understanding of the principles and processes of change within an individual, group or organisational context through an active and innovative approach to learning and teaching. There are also options at PG Diploma and MSc levels in Strategic Management or Training and Development.

Entrance Requirements

MSc A 2.2 Honours degree or above or equivalent recognised qualification in Business/Management Studies, Agriculture, Food Science or Food Technology, Geography or other approved subject.

PG Diploma and PG Certificate A Degree or Higher National Diploma, or equivalent recognised qualification in an appropriate subject.

Advanced Diploma A minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience in the agriculture or food industries. The Advanced Diploma award also enables progression into the PG Certificate programme.

Additional Information for International Students

Applicants who are non-EEA nationals must satisfy the UK Border Agency (UKBA) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes, by providing evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
*Taken within the last 2 yrs.

MSc: 1 (calendar) year full-time or 3 years part-time
PG Diploma: 1 (academic) year full-time or 2 years part-time
PG Certificate: 1 semester full-time or 1 year part-time

Programme Content

Advanced Diploma
Three modules are required to be completed:
Business Communication
Information Communication and Learning Technology
Personal Communication

Postgraduate Certificate
Three modules are required to be completed:
Communication Dynamics
Communication Skills to Affect Change
Managing the Learning Process

Postgraduate Diploma
Six modules are required to be completed, the three modules on the PG Certificate programme, plus Communication Research and Development and Planning and Evaluating Change Management.

Strategic Management option
Strategic Management for Rural Business

Training and Development option
Employee Development for Rural Business

Postgraduate Diploma students will be permitted to transfer to the MSc and proceed with a research project if they obtain a sufficiently high standard of work throughout the year (50 per cent minimum in each module).

MSc
Six modules from the PG Diploma programme, plus a research project.

Assessment

Advanced Diploma, PG Diploma and MSc students will be assessed by assignments, projects, work-related competence profiles and written and oral examinations.

MSc students are asked to submit a research dissertation on an approved communication topic. There is an optional study tour.

Opportunities for Careers

Communication graduates have obtained a wide range of employment positions, including personnel managers, teachers/trainers, consultants, development officers, managers within the food and retail sectors, or developing their own business ideas.

Special Features

Full-time postgraduate students complete two short placements. In the first semester, two weeks or 10 days teaching at a College of Further Education and in the second semester, three weeks within a commercial setting developing communication materials and applying their skills in a managerial or supervisory role.

Self-funded study trip to Europe to observe best practices within business and community programmes. Erasmus student exchange with the Agrarapadgogische Akademie in Vienna, Austria.
