Why did you decide to study at Queen’s University?

The University’s high position on the league tables and the prestige that comes with getting a degree from Queen’s was a top factor as to why I chose to come here.

Northern Ireland and Belfast has a very homely feel to it which also contributed to my decision as it’s important to feel safe when moving away from home.

Why did you choose your course? Which aspects are you enjoying most?

I chose my course primarily because I know exactly what I want to do when I finish University and it is quite a specific degree. I would say I enjoy the tutorials the most as you get to really take a subject apart within a group, learn more, debate and meet more people.

What were your first impressions of Queen’s when you started?

It was clear from Welcome Week that Queen’s is a very prestigious and high-class university. The University made new students feel very worthy of being here by having alumni speak about their experiences and letting us know about programmes such as Degree Plus, Erasmus and Study USA.

I felt that Queen’s would look after me as a student and despite being only at the start of my second semester I feel very much part of a community.

What do you do outside of your studies? Have you joined any clubs or societies?

As a politics student I am part of the PolySoc (Politics Society). They offered a really good welcome night for new students which involved lots of free pizza and meeting different people on your course and with different interests.

I’m also part of the Queen’s Swimming, Water Polo and Lifesaving Club which offers lots of opportunities to be part of competitions or even just keep fit!

How have you settled into living in Belfast?

I didn’t know anyone else who was coming to Queen’s from where I live in Wales – so was very much thrown in the deep end! I am very lucky to be living with lovely people in Elms Village and have also made lots of friends through my course, societies and nights out. I have also managed to find a part-time job (ensuring I don’t do too much with exams coming up!).

What advice would you give students thinking about studying at Queen’s?

I would say look into your course and come along to an open day. If you are moving away from home, don’t be too nervous as it is a really good opportunity to learn to look after yourself and become independent.

Queen’s is a top university for the majority of the subjects it offers and by having a degree from Queen’s you will have an advantage when it comes to finding a job.
