Gender and Leadership in Science and Society (GLiSS)

Emerging from the Shadows
GLiSS is a consortium of initiatives at Queen’s, each with a distinct focus, working together to promote women’s leadership and gender equality. Informed by a strong research base on women in decision-making through the Centre for Advancement of Women in Politics (CAWP), the activities of the Gender Initiative Office, Equal Opportunities Unit, the Students’ Union and the University-wide Scientific Women Academic Networks (SWAN) contribute to the objectives set out above. They are supported in turning the objectives into reality by the  Senate, the Human Resources Directorate, the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Planning Office, Staff Training and Development Unit and Hospitality Services. As a leading employer in a part of the UK in which equality is a highly politicised issue, Queen’s has a particular obligation to lead the way in setting standards for women’s economic, social and cultural empowerment.   The quest for gender equity in employment has led to an Institution-wide initiative whose principal objectives are to:

  • develop an organisational culture that recruits, retains and advances talented women
  • actively address policy issues affecting women’s participation and progression
  • actively promote leadership opportunities for women in science
  • influence cultural attitudes to gender equality in the wider community through leading by example.
