Professor Sir Peter Gregson was appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast in 2004.   He has led the University into the Russell Group of the 20 leading UK universities in 2006 and to the Times Higher Education UK Entrepreneurial University of the Year in 2009.  Underpinned by excellence in research and education and with a student-centred ethos, Queen’s has a disproportionate impact on society in Northern Ireland and overseas. Professor Gregson places particular emphasis on raising the global impact of Queen’s through the development of internationally recognised centres of excellence linked to global businesses, government bodies and universities - including strategic partnerships with Georgetown University, University Malaya, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Educated at Imperial College London, he graduated with BSc (Eng) (First Class) in Materials Science in 1980 and was awarded the Bessemer Medal; he obtained his PhD in 1983 and was awarded the Matthey Prize. Appointed to the academic staff at the University of Southampton in 1983, he became Professor of Aerospace Materials in 1995 and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2000.

He published more than 150 peer reviewed papers between 1983 and 2005 and received the Donald Julius Groen Prize of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (1994) and the Rosenhain Medal and Prize of the Institute of Materials (1996) for his research on the development of advanced aerospace aluminium alloys.

He has been elected to Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2001), Irish Academy of Engineering (2007) and Royal Irish Academy (2007). He has received Honorary Degrees from Bengal Engineering and Science University (2008), National University of Ireland (2008) and University of Southampton (2009).  He has previously served on the Councils of The Royal Academy of Engineering (2005-08), the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (2004-06).

He received a Flax Trust Award for services to the community in 2010.  The video clip prepared for the Flax Trust Super Bowl Ball, on 5 February 2010, can be accessed here.

He was appointed Non-Executive Director of Rolls Royce Group plc in 2007 and Director of UCEA (the Universities and Colleges Employers Association) in 2008.  He serves on the Council of CBI Northern Ireland and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Belfast in 2007.

He was awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2011.
