Petulant and capricious Bella is chosen by Old John Harmon as the wife for his son. The Boffins take her in and she indulges her mercenary streak, encouraged by Boffin’s own miser impulses. She initially rejects Rokesmith's proposal before eloping with him, after Boffin mistreats him. Bella is close to her father and has two sisters, Lavinia and Cecilia
