We will introduce wavelets by presenting a linear algebra approach to the simplest example, Haar wavelets, motivated by a real world application to data/image compression.

Then we move on to a more abstract framework for wavelets, called multiresolution analysis, which facilitates the discussion of important recent generalizations of Haar wavelets.
