Pure Mathematics at
Queen's has achieved a dramatic improvement in the
2008 RAE. In 2001 we were only able to submit 75% of our staff and
still only two-thirds of our output was deemed to be of national
excellence. By contrast, in 2008 we submitted 90% of our staff and 95% of
our output was deemed to be of international quality with 45% of it
being rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Only two other
submissions of a similar or smaller size obtained better results.
At a champagne
reception to celebrate the results, Prof. Anthony Wickstead,
Director of the Pure Mathematics Research Centre, congratulated
everyone in
Pure Mathematics on the outcome. He especially thanked the few who were
not submitted but nevertheless made a vital contribution to this
performance. 'This is a great result for Pure Mathematics at Queen's',
he said. 'Our dramatic improvement since 2001 shows that we have delivered on
the significant investment made in Pure Mathematics over the last few years'.
