Showcase: 2016 Summer Student Programme

SHOWCASE: 2016 CEM SUMMER STUDENT PROGRAMME

In June, CEM welcomed the 2016 cohort of Summer Students to our labs to experience what life is like in a research environment. This year we hosted a total of 19 students from a range of academic backgrounds from both within and outside QUB including participants from University of Cambridge, University of Leeds and Trinity College Dublin.

The Programme opened this year at the Annual Regenerative Medicine Research Groups (Remerge) Symposium in Riddel Hall on June 20th where the students heard first-hand about the exciting regenerative medicine research taking place here in CEM and beyond. This was followed by an induction day, which introduced participants to the programme within CEM and featured a welcome from CEM Director Professor José Bengoechea, health and safety training, administrative registration and a building tour before the students met with their supervisors and research teams. This year the programme also featured a joint outing around the sights of Belfast with our neighbouring summer students from CCRCB, as well as a number of career and skills workshops and research seminars over the course of the programme.

‌‌The programme culminated in the highlight event which was the Annual Summer Student Research Symposium on Thursday August 11th 2016 in which students delivered talks on their research over the summer to fellow CEM researchers. The event was a great success and the quality of the student talks was commended by audience members at all levels. Congratulations to all the speakers who took part on the day and to the prize winners; Hannah Gardiner (Brazil lab)Adam Wilson (Grieve lab) and Xuedi Liu (Hobley lab) who are pictured below receiving their prizes from CEM Director, Professor José Bengoechea.
