Who are we?

The CPAL2  project team comprises:

Professor John Gardner (formerly  Dean and Head of the School of Education at Queen’s) is presently Deputy Principal at the University of Stirling. His main research and teaching interests include policy and practice in education, particularly in relation to assessment and learning.  John was  a key member on the  UK’s Assessment  Reform Group (ARG) and has been a co-investigator on both phases of the CPAL project. His most recent publications include: Assessment and Learning (2012, Sage), Developing Teacher Assessment (2010, McGraw-Hill/Open University) and The Classroom X-Factor (2011, Routledge).

Professor Ruth Leitch is Director of Research in the School of Education at Queens. Her main research interests concern teacher development and how to encourage young people to engage creatively in research.  Ruth has been the Principal Investigator of both phases of  the CPAL project. Recent publications include Student Voices in a Global Context in the Routledge International Handbook of Teacher and School Development (2011, Taylor & Francis) and Creating the Curriculum (2012, Routledge) with colleagues.

Dr Stephanie Mitchell has been Research Fellow on both phases of the CPAL project, taking the lead on all consultation work with pupils and the direction of the short film, A Classroom Tale during CPAL2. Stephanie completed her doctorate on student participation in schools in N. Ireland  which led to publications including the widely cited journal article ‘Caged birds and cloning machines: how student imagery ‘speaks’ to us about cultures of schooling and student participation’ (2007, Improving Children’s Lives 7 (1) 53-71).

Dr Carmel Gallagher is Registrar, General Teaching Council N. Ireland and has been an independent consultant. She has been a visiting scholar at Queen’s and Research Fellow on the CPAL 2 project, taking the lead on work with teachers, developing AfL strategies to support pupil participation. She has recently completed her doctorate on the development of the revised Northern Ireland curriculum and is one of the authors of  the recently published Creating the Curriculum (2012, Routledge).
