The Centre for Infection and Immunity (CII) is an expanding collaborative interdisciplinary research Centre committed to the highest quality research excellence. Our mission is to build on our high-quality research programmes and to further develop our world-class research by recruiting others in the areas of infectious and inflammatory diseases. Our new Centre occupies a ‘state-of-the-art’ facility with space for 220 researchers and capacity for future expansion.
Our research is focused on Respiratory and Infectious disease, molecular Immunology and Autoimmune Disease. The Respiratory disease research strengths include Asthma, Respiratory Infection, Cough, Acute Lung Injury and Cystic Fibrosis. The hallmark of our research programme is a close, collaborative interaction between clinical and basic science experts that ultimately enhances the quality and scope of our basic and clinical research programmes on infection and other important human diseases, such as lung and autoimmune diseases. The principal research programmes within the Centre include:
- Respiratory disease including Asthma, Acute Lung Injury, Cystic Fibrosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Regulation of the immune system and Autoimmune disease
- Molecular (RNA) virology, virus-host interaction and vaccines
- The study of opportunistic infections and antibiotic resistant bacteria
The Centre’s goals are to:
- provide an internationally competitive, interdisciplinary research centre of the highest quality
- foster and generate scientific knowledge and to share that knowledge with researchers, clinicians, patients and the public through educational activities, training programmes and publications
- improve patient care through clinical trial research; the translation of applied basic science into the clinical arena
- educate and train future clinical and scientific leaders in medical and biomedical research
- develop strong collaborative interactions with research organisations nationally and internationally
- support commercialisation of our research and accelerate the translation of our discoveries to clinical implementation and patient care
