'FROM DISCOVERY TO RECOVERY'
Current research interests
My major interest is acute lung injury (ALI). My research strategy in ALI is to investigate potential novel therapeutic agents in ALI in vitro, in vivo in a human LPS model of ALI and in phase 2 clinical trials to inform subsequent phase 3 clinical trials. My roles as the UK Intensive Care Society Co-Director of Research, the Irish Critical Care Trials group Chair and the NICRN (Critical Care) clinical lead, mean I am well placed to develop the novel therapeutic targets into phase 3 clinical trials. I am currently investigating the role of statins and keratinocyte growth factor in vitro, in the in vivo human LPS model and in early phase clinical trials in the prevention and treatment of ALI.
I am currently investigating elafin and SLPI in vitro with a view to developing these agents as potential therapeutic agents for ALI.
I am also interested in ion channel function in the clearance of pulmonary oedema in ALI as well as the pathophysiological role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), oncostatin M and receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) in ALI.
My other research interests are vascular reactivity in critical illness, nosocomial MRSA and fungal infection, acute kidney injury, delirium in critical illness and interventions in patients undergoing major vascular surgery to avoid pulmonary complications.
