Research Statement
My major research interest is innate immunity and inflammation.  I am particularly interested in the host response to pathogens including the expression and functionality of host defence peptides and in the contribution of the nervous system to the local inflammatory response (neurogenic inflammation).  I am also interested in the role of proteases in inflammation and their role in the degradation of host defence proteins and peptides.

Professional Qualifications

In addition to welcoming academic and business collaborators to Queen's I have visited many institutions to deliver invited talks and to collaborate. I have been active in engaging with the placement of Nuffield students and school students and in offering my time to serve on the Newton Fund panel as well as ad hoc reviewing for BBSRC, MRC, the Wellcome Trust and the Newton Fund. I serve on the Editorial panel of the Journal of Endodontics, and have recently been appointed to the role of Associate Editor for Archives of Oral Biology.
