EU Work (2009-20012)

Evaluator for Stage 1 of the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking (IMI JU)  which is a public-private partnership between the European Commission and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA). This involved evaluating the Expressions of Interest submitted by Applicant Consortia (i.e. consortia formed from academia, SMEs, patient organisations, non EFPIA industry, etc). The aim was to select the best Expression of Interest in order to join a pre-established Consortium of member companies of EFPIA (industry).

Selected evaluator for Stage 2 of the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking, which involved evaluating the Full Project Proposals from the successful Applicant Consortium and the pre-established Consortium of member companies of EFPIA (industry).

Rapporteur for the  Interim Review of U-BIOPRED Project: “Unbiased Biomarkers for the Prediction of Respiratory Disease Outcome”.  The role of the Rapporteur  was to consolidate the consensus Review Report with the input from the other Reviewers, after a hearing meeting in Brussels.  I was selected from the original panel of evaluators (from Stage 2). The other members of the review group were from the Scientific Committee of the IMI Joint Undertaking (IMI JU). I was the only person selected from the original evaluators to review the progress of the project.

Evaluator for Stage 1 of the FP7-HEALTH-2012-Innovation 1 applications in Systems Medicine.  In this first stage, short proposals (5 pages) were submitted and evaluators selected the best ones. Selected proposals were then invited to submit a full proposal.

Evaluator for Stage 2 of the FP7-HEALTH-2012-Innovation 1 applications in Systems Medicine for the topic 2.1-2-2 "Systems medicine: Applying systems biology approaches for understanding multifactorial human diseases and their co-morbidities."

Scientific Expert for German Government (2010-2011)

In a unique effort to establish six National Centres for Research in the fields of the most common diseases a National Centre for Lung Research was planned. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) spending on this centre is of the order of more than 100 million Euro over the first 5 years.  The aim of the BMBF was to develop a centrally coordinated research hub for this important research area in Germany. I was selected as one of the review panel of internationally renowned experts in the field.  This work entailed: firstly evaluating all the proposals from potential centre partners and the pre-selection of 12 partners to submit to the second stage; secondly evaluating the second stage applications which included also hearing them present their proposals which resulted in the selection of the partners  for the centre and thirdly reviewing the joint proposal developed by the partners specifically for its scientific and structural integrity, the long-term strategy and sustainability as well as and most importantly, the added value for the area of lung research in Germany. This work entailed reviewing at home as well as 3 trips to Germany for the meetings.

Review of manuscripts for journals

I serve as a referee for the following journals: Allergy, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Biochemical Pharmacology, British Journal of Pharmacology, Clinical and Experimental Allergy, European Journal of Pharmacology, European Respiratory Journal, Immunopharmacology, Inflammation Research,  Journal of Leukocyte Biology, Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Life Sciences, Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Pediatric Pulmonology, Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Thorax.
