| Current Research: | My research mainly focuses on biosensing using plasmonic nanostructures, more specifically on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We use a custom built multi-wavelength excitation Raman spectrometer to measure the SERS enhancement factor across the visible and NIR range on a wide variety of nanostructured surfaces. This wavelength-scanned SERS (WS-SERS) technique, combined with more traditional optical characterisation (transmission, reflection etc.), allows us to probe in detail the effect of nano-geometry on the plasmonic response of a nanostructured surface.
I am also interested in novel guided modes present in plasmonic ‘metamaterials’, and their use in biosensing. |

| Current Research: | Research focuses on mapping and understanding the manner in which reduced size and increased morphological complexity affect the switching behaviour of meso and nanoscale ferroelectrics. Our approach is to make devices incorporating single crystal ferroelectric material which has been machined to thin film dimensions using Focused Ion Beam milling. Piezoresponse Force Microscopy is used to visualise explicitly the dynamics of domain wall motion during switching. |

Part of the Seagate funded ANSIN team which investigates the next generation of read and write head for hard disk drives. My personal task is to fabricate and analyse new high moment materials which may serve as future write head, i.e. which have a strong and stable magnetization (exceeding present iron-cobalt or -nickel alloys) and therefore may serve in heat assisted magnetic recording based devices. |
