Intense laser driven ion acceleration

In the context of developing compact, high current ion accelerators, the study of laser-driven acceleration mechanisms and the characterization and optimization of the ion beams produced, have been, over the past decade, very active areas of research. Experiments have demonstrated, over a wide range of laser and target parameters, the generation of multi-MeV proton and ion beams with unique properties such as ultrashort duration, high brilliance, and low emittance. These findings generated an enormous interest both in fundamental research and in the possible applications, such as proton probing of transient electromagnetic process during the intense laser plasma interaction, which provides valuable information about the interaction to learn, control and advance the field of research. Other potential applications of the laser driven ion beams spans across a wide range of disciplines from science (such as warm dense matter creation, secondary radiation source development (such as neutrons) to healthcare (radionuclide production for PET and cancer treatment).

Researchers from the group have been deeply involved in this area of research since its emergence in the beginning of this millennium, soon after the development of the lasers capable of delivering intensities on target well above 1018 W/cm2. The avenues of research being pursued by the team range from exploring new mechanisms for efficient acceleration, to optimisation of the beams produced by the established techniques and diagnostic development.
