Interests

I am currently employed with the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry and I am a member of the Centre for Statistical Science and Operational Research (CenSSOR), in Queen's University Belfast. Before I came to Belfast he had been working for the Siemens Medical Solutions (former SMS) in Rome. I have a Laurea (BA+MA) in Philosophy with Mathematical Logic and a BSc in Physics with Astrophysics. I have completed a MSc in Bioinformatics, during which I developed a system for the presentation to clinicians of up-to-date patient-relevant information from biomedical literature and epidemiological analysis, while the professionals are reviewing their own cases on a patient management system. I am currently working on a part-time PhD project on ontology-driven information extraction from free text. I have investigated the use of pattern-based information extraction for the mining of term-value couples from prostate cancer and melanoma pathology reports and contributed to a study assessing the different methods to calculate Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) velocity for detection of prostate cancer. I have also contributed to the evaluation of confidentiality practices among surgical trainees handling electronic patient data. I created, in collaboration with clinicians and service delivery policy makers, a system for the live recording and display of medical information during multidisciplinary team meetings for cancer patients - for which I won the 2007 Northern Ireland Healthcare "Innovations in Oncology" Award - and an application for calculating the staging of cancers on the basis of raw information. I have also collaborated with Ralf Barkemeyer, in the School of Management, in the application of information extraction techniques to the analysis of corporate responsiblity policy documents issued by global companies.
