Promoting Reconciliation through a Shared Curriculum Experience
Description: In the international and local literature there have been numerous calls for more rigorous research to examine the effectiveness of educational initiatives aiming to promote community relations through specific curricular programmes and cross-community contact. This research evaluated the impact of a specifically designed programme for primary and post-primary curriculum subjects which directly address community relations and reconciliation in Northern Ireland within cross-community and single-school settings. The programme was designed and supported through the Western Education and Library Board and funded by the International Fund for Ireland. Undertaken through the Centre for Effective Education, the evaluation consisted of a cluster randomised controlled trial involving 40 schools (24 primary and 16 post-primary), supplemented with qualitative semi-structured interviews and small focus groups.
