This will connect you to a dedicated emergency phone on the Royal Hospitals’ telephone switchboard. The switchboard staff will then contact the appropriate emergency service. Important: When you phone to report an emergency be prepared to:-
1. State which emergency service you require i.e. Fire Brigade, Ambulance etc. 2. State the nature of the emergency (e.g. fire, injury) and if possible indicate the severity. 3. Give the location of the Emergency i.e. building name, street address, floor of building, room number or name. 4. Give your name and the extension number of the phone you are using to make the report.
If it is possible and safe to do so, keep close to the telephone so that you may pass on any further information required by the emergency services.
Phenol burn (Trizol). - Immediate action: Rinse under fast running cold tap for at least 10 min, then cover with glycerol and keep in place with a bandage - Seek further advice and assistance - Report the incident as soon as reasonably possible
Chemical splashed in eye. - Irrigate immediately with emergency eye wash solution (or other source of clean water) - Seek further advice and assistance - Report the incident as soon as reasonably possible
Cut /wound (eg pasteur pipette) - immediately encourage it to bleed, wash thoroughly with soap and water but DO NOT SCRUB, then cover with waterproof dressing. - In event of contamination of skin, conjunctivae or mucous membrane immediately wash thoroughly. - If in doubt seek advice from a Trained First Aider or University Occupational Health Officer
All accidents and incidents must be immediately reported to and recorded by the person responsible for the work or other duly delegated person and Accident Report Form completed.
