Outreach

CVVS is engaged with multiple outreach activities in Belfast and other towns in Northern Ireland.  In partnership with the QUB Outreach programme, CVVS hosts pupils for up to one week to gain valuable exposure to the day-to-day research activities here in our centre.  In addition, researchers participate in University Open days on site and in schools in the local community.  Staff also visit schools to speak to A-level pupils about potential careers in science and medicine, such as Wallace High School in Lisburn. Anyone interested in an outreach activity involving CVVS investigators should contact Lisa Rutherford.

In recent years, CVVS researchers have worked closely with the local educational charity, Sentinus, which works with schools and colleges throughout Northern Ireland to deliver programmes which promote engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Through this partnership, CVVS has provided a number of summer laboratory projects sponsored by the Nuffield Foundation.  As part of this scheme, pupils whose projects are deemed to be the best regionally are given the opportunity to present their work nationally at the British Science Festival
