A PhD student supervised by Dr Derek Brazil, Centre for Vision and Vascular Science has been awarded the prestigious prize of Best Published Paper by a Young Scientist in the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) Journal in 2011. The prize winning student, Dr Rosemarie Carew carried out her PhD in Dr Brazil’s laboratory during his time at the University College Dublin.

The paper entitled "Insulin receptor substrate 2 and FoxO3a signalling are involved in E-cadherin expression and transforming growth factor-β1-induced repression in kidney epithelial cells" was published in FEBS J in September 2011.  (Rosemarie M. Carew, Marie B. Browne, Fionnuala B. Hickey and Derek P. Brazil; in FEBS J (2011) Sep; 278 (18): 3370-80.) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21777391

The prize of €10,000, includes a prestigious speaker invitation to present the work at the plenary session of the forthcoming 2012 FEBS meeting in Seville this September.

This work was supported by IRCSET's EMBARK Postgraduate Scholarship and SFI. Research into the role of Insulin Receptor Substrate-2 is continuing in Dr Brazil’s CVVS laboratory within the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.

The FEBS Journal Prize is awarded to the graduate student or young post-doctoral research worker (no more than 3 years from the time of the PhD award to when the paper is submitted) who is the first author of a paper that is judged to be the best in FEBS Journal during the calendar year.

FEBS is one of the largest organisations in European life sciences, with nearly 40.000 members distributed among 36 Constituent Societies and 7 Associated Member Societies in 43 countries. It seeks to promote, encourage and support biochemistry, molecular cell biology and molecular biophysics throughout Europe (http://www.febs.org/index.php?id=170).
