David left school in 1993 and briefly studied art before becoming self-employed for a few years. Following this he worked in the IT sector before returning to full-time education. David joined Queen's in 2009 at the age of 35 to study for a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering which then led to a Master's Degree.

For David's final year Master's project he helped to develop the Queen's Robosub, an autonomous underwater vehicle. This led to his current PhD research, Formation Control Strategies for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles.

David joined EPIC in October 2014 and is looking at ways to coordinate a fleet of unmanned underwater vehicles for navigation and collision avoidance.
