Research Project: Secure Wireless Telecommunications Infrastructure for Electrical Utilities

Electrical utilities are increasingly making use of technologies which require wide area telecommunications for the purposes of monitoring, protection and control. The utility faces two challenges in this regard. Firstly, many utility sites are beyond reach of traditional telecoms delivery technologies. Secondly, the utility must be confident of the reliability and security of the telecommunications network.

My project will involve an investigation on how to utilise the state-of-the-art in telecommunications technologies to deliver the connectivity that will be at the heart of next-generation utilities. Maximising throughput and minimising latency across the WAN will be fundamental to this project; as well as a comprehensive investigation of the security needs of such a crucial system.
