Biography

John Rafferty received a Masters Degree here atQueen’s University and is currently working towards a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. His main areas of research are in the field of VSC based Multi-terminal DC systems for Wind Farm integration and Transmission Network support; as well as, protection of VSC systems against offshore DC and onshore AC Faults.

PhD research
Title:The role of multi-terminal DC transmission for wind farm integration and transmission network support.
The aim of the project is to develop strategies for the safe and efficient operation on Multi-terminal HVDC systems based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology. Strategies that could be used to maximize the potential of MTDC systems in terms of power sharing and allow full utilization of the network support benefits offered by VSC are being developed. In addition to this, the project also focuses on the safe operation of such systems as a result of network disturbances, both AC and DC. It will outline fast acting schemes for both; the protection of the system during potential fault scenarios, and; the restoration of non-faulted potions of the system after faults have been cleared. This will help improve security of supply within the system and ensure minimal outage times, as a result of transient system faults, are achieved
