Professor Shirley Mangini

"Women at War: Spain (1936-1939)"

Professor Mangini is Emeritus Professor at the University of California, Long Beach , and has published extensively on Spanish Literature and Politics with a focus on women and gender issues. Her books include: Rojos y rebeldes.  La cultura de la disidencia durante el franquismo, (on dissident intellectuals during the Franco Regime); Memories of Resistance.  Women’s Voices from the Spanish Civil War (1995), and Las modernas de Madrid (2001), a study of the lives and work of exceptional women, political, teachers, artists, and writers in Madrid in the first third of the 20th century. Her book on the Spanish Avant-Garde in Madrid and the artist Maruja Mallo is forthcoming.


Prof Mangini’s talk will be followed by a response from

Daniel Kowalsky (School of History, QUB)

and a discussion.
