Research Focus:

Title: Investigation into the Hydrodynamics of Wave Energy Converter Arrays

Abstract: The primary focus of my research is with regards to the hydrodynamic interaction that occurs between Wave Energy Converters (WECs) when deployed at farm scale. ‘Farms’ of WECs are likely to be of the magnitude of 100+ individual devices. It is expected that the placement of these devices in close proximity to one another will have some effect on both their hydrodynamic operation and potential power capture. My research aims to quantify this occurrence for a variety of device styles, with primary consideration being given to pitching, flap-type devices such as that of the Oyster. The research will be completed through both numerical and physical experimentation with the end goal of providing an understanding of the effect of farm scale device placement.

Interests:

My primary research focus is in relation to the generation of energy from ocean waves however I also hold a keen interest in other areas such as:

-          Tidal energy

-          Coastal processes

-          Waste management

-          Biomass utilisation

-          Climate change
