The Institute was officially launched on 21st May 2013 by President Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland, Nobel Peace Prize winner and a UN mediator.  He is perhaps best known in Ireland for his contribution to the peace process and his role on the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning.
