| The alto flute is larger than the C concert flute and has a lovely, velvety sound. Because of its size, the alto flute can either be played with a straight or curved headjoint, depending on the player. The alto flute is a transposing instrument and sounds a fourth lower than printed on the stave. In the flute band there are usually only two alto parts: solo and alto. The solo line has the most technically difficult part to play in the bass section, while the alto part fills out the underlying harmonies. | |
