Circus Neither Arran nor the Indian performer families he worked with would classify all their skills as 'circus'. For example puppetry would not be counted as a traditional circus skill by either.

Families are both Hindu and Muslim. Traditionally families specialised in specific skills, such as pupeteering or juggling. Specific tasks would then be divided up between the family members. In a pupeteering family one person would be responsible for customs, another for carving the puppet, and so on. Arron says skills were passed down through the generations with little embellishment. Some performers' attitudes seem quite pragmatic. If a living could be made out of a skill they already had, they don’t necessarily try to further their skill level.

Lifestyles Another effect of change is that some individuals are being forced to broaden their range of activities. Whereas previously skills were specialised, performers now do multiple tasks, such as selling puppets to tourists or having one individual combine different tasks in making the puppet. Not all are coping with change in the same way. One puppeteer has done well by branching out into contemporary puppeteering (photo opposite) and perspectives on performance skills also differ with the level of prosperity of the performer.

Workshop Some of the skills Arron taught, like stilt-walking, were taken up and used by local performers. His partner, Louise, also taught facepainting and encouraged the children to explore Indian styles. Some of these children were taken to an Indian festival in Dubai where their face painting was exhibited as an original Indian artform! Arran was also invited to hold numerous other workshops for special needs children and other schools. Generally, he would arrive at the venue, demonstrate the skill, then let the children have the equipment to play and experiment with.

Highly thought of One juggler who had been in Holland was very impressed at the level of skill he witnessed there, but he mentioned to Arron that when he started to perform attention was focused on him. Some of the perfomers Arron saw do have a very high level of skill. Their style is often very much their own, as with ‘backwards’ juggling.

Novel to teach Skills were traditionally not shared outside a closed family circle where they were used to make a living. One juggler was taken aback at teaching children how to juggle for fear they would use the skill for commercial ends.
