Byzantine Studies

Welcome to the Institute of Byzantine Studies. After twenty-five years of Byzantine Studies at Queen’s the Institute was established on 1 August 2000, when Queen’s was awarded £1m from the Arts and Humanities Research Board.

Byzantine Studies examines the people, society and culture of the Byzantine Empire, the successor to the Roman Empire, centred on Constantinople, from AD330 to AD1453. We take an interdisciplinary approach investigating the literature, language, art and material culture, theology and history of this complex society.
