Northern Ireland's food and land industry is a successful, dynamic and multi-faceted natural resource that makes a significant contribution to economic and social development.  Farming and the food industry account for more than 8% of NI's employment while 40% of its population live in rural areas.  Effective and efficient use of rural and urban land is increasingly important due to its finite nature and environmental impact.

As the largest industry in the world, agriculture involves feeding our communities and looking after our environment.  Today's industry, however, is facing a huge number of challenges in an ever-changing world.  With increased efficiency in production, less land is required, leading to new opportunities for rural land use.  These include the provision of sport and rural leisure facilities for the general public, as well as the production of niche products for the market place.  Farming practices have also had to take account of environmental and welfare pressures.

The food industry is also one of the most important sectors in the economy in terms of employment and outputs. In recent years, food safety issues have dominated news headlines, with the result that public interest in food, and misinformation about the subject, has never been greater.  Consumers are entitled to expect that all the food they eat will be safe and wholesome.  Adverse effects of over-nutrition as well as under-nutrition are now public issues and there is a growing pressure for the whole food chain to be inspected and managed correctly to ensure our food is safe to eat.
