Therapeutic Biomolecules

The Problem

There are large and growing unmet medical needs for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's and cardiovascular disease.  Existing therapies display side-effects and suffer from secondary failure.  Novel, innovative and more efficacious treatments are sought.  Several peptide hormones originating from the gastrointestinal tract possess therapeutic effects in relation to these diseases.

The Research

In collaboration with national and international collaborators we are developing and testing novel peptide analogues of hormones with recognised therapeutic actions.  Strategic molecular modifications are carried out to generate more stable peptide analogues with prolonged and/or enhanced biological activity.

The Anticipated Outcomes

This research aims to develop new drug candidate molecules for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's and cardiovascular disease.
