Profile

Caroline has been employed as a research technician at Queens University Belfast for the past 8 years.  From 2001 until 2008 she was based in the leptospirosis laboratory at the Veterinary Sciences Division.  Here she was involved in carrying out contract research work for industry and was also part of international scientific collaborations.  During this time she has acquired a wide range of scientific skills in areas such as cell culture, ELISA development and molecular techniques.  In 2008 she joined The Institute of Agri-Food and Land Use as research technician for the cell culture laboratory where she is involved in the management of this facility.  Caroline also provides ongoing support to research projects concerned with detecting hormonal contaminants in various food products.  The research encompasses a variety of steroidal contaminants including estrogens and androgens that can act as endocrine disrupting compounds when ingested.  Current research involves the optimization of novel biological technologies such as the reporter gene assay for the detection of endocrine disrupters.

Caroline has recently been awarded a travel scholarship from the Irish Society of Toxicology.  She will attend the Gordon Research Conference on Environmental Endocrine Disruptors, Les Diablerets, Switzerland on 30th May-4th June 2010.  Here she will present a poster on her current project which investigates mycotoxins found in food and their potential to act as endocrine disruptors.
