Gillian McGaughey is a barrister specialising in family and child law at the Northern Ireland Bar. Gillian was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1988 and to the Bar of Ireland in 1999. She is a member of the Bar’s Advocacy Training Board and an accredited advocacy trainer.
As a full time lecturer at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Queen’s University Belfast, she teaches,Evidence and Advocacy and co-ordinates the experiential Bar Library learning programmes for Bar trainees. Her other subjects include Family Law, Practice and Procedure and Criminal Procedure (Summary). She also co-ordinates the Judge Shadowing Programme for Bar Trainees.
Gillian is secretary to the Institute Trainee Progress Committee and Examinations Officer. She also acts as Co-ordinator of the Institute’s Continuing Professional Development Programme.
She is also a legal assessor for the Nursing and Midwifery Council, London, a panel chair of the Police Appeals Tribunal and a member of the Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission.
Gillian has been a stakeholder member of the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, the regulatory body for the social care workforce in Northern Ireland, since its inception and until 2010 chaired the Council’s Registration and Regulation Committee.
