LONE WORKING BY POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS OUTSIDE NORMAL HOURS
1. Postgraduate students may work in College buildings outside normal office (i.e. 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Mondays-Fridays) hours only when they have the permission of the Principal of the College to do so.
2. A decision to grant permission is at the discretion of each individual Principal and is to be based on a risk assessment. It may be that different permissions are given to research PhD students than to course-taught Masters students.
3. Risk assessment should normally include:
• The nature of the work permitted to be undertaken outside business hours
• The justification of the need for it to be done outside business hours
• The people undertaking the work – do they have any medical condition (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, coronary heart disease, etc.) which would leave them vulnerable if they worked alone?
• Hazards arising from the work (e.g. fire, electrical, etc.)
• Likely risks and the risk of harm arising there from
• Measures needed to control the risks.
4. Students working under these conditions should be fully familiar with local rules regarding fire prevention and detection, emergency exits, and the emergency contact numbers.
