Tony Watson

  

Dr Tony Watson, DSc (Econ) 1967, CBE

Dr Tony Watson is currently the senior independent director of Hammerson plc (and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee), senior independent director of Witan Investment Trust, a non-executive director of Vodafone Group, Lloyds Banking Group plc (and  Chairman of the Remuneration Committee), and on the Advisory Board of Norges Bank Investment Management.  He is also a member of the Shareholder Executive Board.   Tony was formerly Chairman of The Strategic Investment Board in Northern Ireland, but retired in March 2009.  He retired as Chairman of Marks & Spencer Pension Trust Limited in March 2010.

In January 2009, Tony was awarded the CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his services to the economic redevelopment of Northern Ireland.

Early in 2006, Tony retired from his role as Chief Executive of Hermes Pensions Management Limited, a position he had held since 2002.  Prior to that he was Hermes’ Chief Investment Officer, having been Managing Director of AMP Asset Management plc, and the Chief International Investment Officer of Citicorp Investment Management from 1991 until joining Hermes in 1998.

Educated at Queen’s University Belfast and a qualified barrister, Dr Watson has held a number of advisory positions during his distinguished career.
