‘I think the placement year was very beneficial for me as I feel that I am more employable, I have gained relevant experience and skills and it has also made my studies more relevant which will help in my final year ‘

Sophie Cassidy – BSc Finance

"My placement at PricewaterhouseCoopers has been fantastic. I have been given a lot of responsibility in the fact that I travelled to England to conduct interviews, and I had the opportunity to manage a project by myself. In addition to this, I have been treated as a colleague, not just a placement student and I believe that I have managed well working in a professional environment. I think that it has been a great opportunity for me to develop a vast amount of crucial skills and I now feel I am a lot more competent. Finally, this placement has helped me to gain so much confidence and I now feel that I have a lot more self belief in myself. It has been an excellent placement and I would thoroughly recommend an industrial placement at PricewaterhouseCoopers to any other student."

Jayne Mc Grillen – BSc Finance,  Placement with PricewaterhouseCoopers

"I am certainly gaining the most from my placement experience so far and already feel confident that the actuarial professional is where I wish to be in the future. I look forward to the remainder of my time with Spence & Partners, to build upon the skills I have gained so far and prepare me for my final year at University."

Rachel Graham  - BSc Actuarial Science and Risk Management, Placement with Spence and Partners

"During my time at Xerox I gained a developed a lot of new skills that will all be transferable and beneficial to any job I pursue in the future.  I started Xerox with very basic excel skills and from working with spread sheets every day to do reports I would now say I am very confident with the package.  I have also gained communication skills in dealing with different members of management and colleagues as well as through different mediums such as email and telephone.  The one that I picked up quickly was time management as I realised quite soon in to my placement that it was very important to get things done on time.  I got to improve on my problem solving skills as working with reports I came across problems as well as any people came to me with.

In conclusion I think the placement year was very beneficial for me as I feel that I am more employable, I have gained relevant experience and skills and it has also made my studies more relevant which will help in my final year."

Sophie Cassidy – BSc Finance, Placement with Xerox

"Overall throughout my placement at Mercer I have gained valuable experience. I have gained important knowledge about the technical side of Mercer and the pension industry in which it operates. In addition I have developed numerous skills on both a personal and professional level that have enhanced my CV and my employability. I can also use the skills I have developed to help me with my studies in final year of university as I hope to achieve a 2:1 degree. I have been able to make a more informed choice for my career plan from working alongside actuaries in Mercer as I decided that this is the career I want to pursue in the future. Depending on my degree results I hope to get back into Mercer after I graduate and start my career in actuary."

"I was fortunate enough to carry out my placement in Madrid, Spain with Amadeus IT Group. I liked it so much that I stayed an extra three and a half months! Amadeus is a fantastic company to work for in many respects, not only was I given the opportunity to move away from home to another country, but I also gained valuable work place experience. I have completed my fifteen months in two different departments and feel a learnt to improve a range of skills sets. I am now able to use a vast range of skills in ensuring I can get projects completed on time. I was also given a good degree of responsibility in both my posts which enabled me to challenge myself and learn to be more aware of other people. I headed up a number of projects during my time at Amadeus, which helped my confidence in not only communicating but in my abilities as well. My experience has been unforgettable and I hope I can now use it as a way to obtain work after graduation."

Anne Crawley - BSc International Business with Spanish, Placement with Amadeus IT Group, Spain

"I am working in Amadeus IT Group in Madrid which is a global company that provides IT solutions for the travel industry. The headquarters are located in Madrid so it deals with all the corporate processes such as HR, Revenues and sales etc. My job is in the Global sourcing team within the GIS department which covers all the internal IT within Amadeus in Madrid. This is a newly created team as the organisation of GIS has been changed over the past few months. At the minute my team is working on sourcing vendors for outsourcing some of our applications. I have different jobs every day and currently am working on a presentation about the new GIS department."

"I'm really enjoying placement, it's a lot of work but it's amazing to be given such responsibility and a chance to demonstrate what you can do to a big international company. It's such a unique experience and I'm learning a lot of things that I think will be useful in my future career."
