The BSc Finance degree has strong links with firms based in the world’s leading financial district, the City of London. Students have numerous opportunities to meet alumni already working in the City, giving them contacts which can prove to be invaluable when applying for jobs.
Many of the modules on the BSc Finance degree include guest lectures by industry experts who share their personal experiences of applying theory to real world situations. Past speakers have discussed topics such as corporate finance, financial regulation and investment banking.
Each year a number of prominent investment bankers take part in a panel discussion on recent developments within the finance industry, and also provide advice on how students can successfully pursue a career within the City. This is followed by a networking event at which students can speak personally to the invited speakers.
In the past few years there have been senior executives at the event from Nomura Securities, Barclays, First Derivatives, Capital International Research, State Street Global Advisors Ireland, JPMorgan Cazenove, StormHarbour Securities, UBS Investment Bank, Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse.
Many students also take part in the annual City of London study tour. This is a week long trip to London, which allows students to visit a number of major financial companies, where they engage in a range of business games, case studies and related exercises reflecting recruitment selection practices.
Students are also provided with a range of networking opportunities either during the employer visit or after working hours in the evenings. This allows students to make connections with recent graduate employees, Queen’s alumni and senior professionals who may become useful mentors and provide valuable help in the recruitment process.
