Environmental Biology

Environmental Biology deals with the responses of organisms - animals, plants and microorganisms - to environmental stimuli and stress, and the ways in which organisms interact with their own and other species in populations and communities.  Organisms are studied on every scale - from the very small to the very large i.e. from the molecular to the Biosphere.  There has probably never been a greater need for people to be conscious of the necessity to look after their environment.

The Honours degree in Environmental Biology at Queen's provides a comprehensive training in many aspects of ecology and the interactions between organisms (including man) and their surroundings.  Graduates are well-placed to pursue research in these areas, perhaps as a route to a higher degree either at Queen's or at another university in Britain or abroad.  The current world-wide concern about environmental issues is resulting in increased employment opportunities, perhaps as wardens or field officers for local authorities or conservation organizations, and graduates in Environmental Biology are particularly well qualified for such jobs.  The experience that you gain from applying the scientific approach to living organisms, solving numerical and practical problems, developing written and oral communication skills and using a wide range of sophisticated equipment will also help you to find employment in a variety of non-biological careers, such as public service administration, industrial management, accountancy and computing.  Many employers are looking for graduates in any discipline, provided they show academic confidence, the ability to communicate, handle quantitative data and solve problems, and have good social skills, a wide range of interests and a record of success.  We believe that studying for a degree in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's will enable you to acquire and develop these qualities.
