Funded PhD studentship

Project title:  Lamprey ecology & genetics
Supervisors:
 Dr Chris Harrod,  Professor Paulo Prodöhl and Dr Neil Reid.

A full-time 3 year PhD studentship funded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is available at Quercus, School of Biological Sciences, Queen's University Belfast.  The study aims to examine the following objectives:

  1. Determine the current distribution and abundance of sea, brook and river lamprey in NI
  2. Verify the taxonomic status of brook and river lamprey using molecular genetics techniques
  3. Determine the phylogenetic history of brook and river lamprey
  4. Population structure and trophic ecology of river and brook lamprey
  5. Determine the impact that physical barriers have on fish movements and/or population structure

Requirements:  The successful applicant will have a 2:1 BSc in zoology/ecology/ecological genetics or other relevant subject area.  Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters degree and those with experience or familiarity of a variety of field skills in collecting biological data, computer literacy (knowledge of databases, spread sheets and data manipulation), ArcGIS and statistical analyses.  A driving licence is essential.
