Research Interests

My principal research interest is the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica.  More specifically I am interested in how flukes and other parasites interact with their hosts and in ways to control parasite infections through the immune response or by anthelmintic drugs.  This has led to work on drug targets such as tubulin and studies on the reproductive strategies employed by the liver fluke.  A developing theme is the analysis of genetic diversity in parasite populations with a view to improving our understanding of the origin of these populations and their potential to develop resistance to anthelmintic drugs.

I have research contacts and collaboration with groups in Wales, Argentina, the Netherlands, Greece and India.  These projects are supported by funding from the BBSRC, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (NI), The British Council and the Socrates Fund of the European Union.
