Please note: between July 2011 and October 2014, I will be based at the University of Antofagasta, Chile, working on the Conicyt-funded project: Provision of key information for marine resource management in Northern Chile.

Research Interests
The ecology, evolution and conservation of fish. The development of stable isotope analysis as a standard method in aquatic ecology. Invasive species ecology. Ecological effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems and species. Tropical ecology (Coral reef and river fishes).
Study species: pollan (Coregonus autumnalis), whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), European eel (Anguilla anguilla), guppies (Poecilia reticulata), 3-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), Orestias chungarensis.
Study sites: I am involved in studies examining the ecology of lakes, rivers and coastal zones in sites across the world, including Ireland (especially Lough Neagh), the UK, France, Finland, Norway, Trinidad and Tobago, Germany, Chile, Canada, and the USA.
Collaborations: Research collaborations both with colleagues within QUB and elsewhere, including the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, Queen Mary - University of London, University of Helsinki, University of Oslo, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, University of Chile, Santiago, University of Lausanne, Environment Agency, Glasgow University, Scottish Natural Heritage, University of the West Indies, National University of Ireland, Galway, University College Cork, University of Konstanz, University of Köln, University of Münster, the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel, and National Institute for Biology, Slovenia.

In December 2012, Oceanography discussed our (Syväranta et al. 2012) recent paper suggesting that the diet of ocean sunfish Mola mola extended beyond that of obligate jellyfish predators.
